- A line moves when a book wants to change who is betting which side, or when new information arrives.
- Moves can come from injury news, weather, lineup changes or a wave of money on one side.
- A move tells you the market changed its mind. It does not tell you the new price is correct.
What a line is
A line is the price a sportsbook offers on an outcome: a point spread, a total or a moneyline. The book sets it so that it can manage its risk across everyone betting on the game.
The first price a book posts is an estimate. Over the following days that estimate gets tested by bettors, by news and by other books, and the price often shifts.
Why lines move
The most common reason is information. A starting quarterback is ruled out, a key defender returns from injury, or the forecast calls for strong wind. Each of these changes what a fair price looks like, and books adjust.
The second reason is money. When one side draws far more action than the other, a book may move the price to make the other side more attractive and balance its exposure.
Books also watch each other. When a respected book moves, others often follow, so a single change can ripple across the market within minutes.
What a move does not tell you
A moving line shows that the market has changed its view. It does not prove the new number is right, and it does not prove the old one was wrong. Late news can reverse a move, and heavy public money can push a price away from where sharper bettors think it belongs.
That is why LeagueMind shows each price with the time it was captured. A price is a snapshot of the market at one moment, not a permanent fact about the game.
How to read movement on LeagueMind
On the Market desk you can see where a price started in our stored data and where it sits now. Our first stored observation is simply the earliest price we captured, which is not necessarily the first price a book posted.
Keep in mind
- Prices are sampled at intervals, so a quick move and reversal between samples may not show up.
- Books post at different times, so the earliest price we stored may differ from the first price a book ever offered.
Odds can change at any time. Please verify them with your sportsbook. You can ask LeagueMind about anything.
